*i completely forgot that i wrote most of this about my marathon shortly after running it at the end of september. i just finished it up and decided to share...
it still doesn't feel real to say that i have run a marathon. it used to be something that seemed so impossible. and i just did it. it was one of the best experiences of my life. training was tough through the summer, there were many nights and mornings that i did not want to go out into the humidity. yet somehow, i finished every single training. somehow i made it through half of my long runs having to go to work after. somehow, i tapered perfectly and ate all the right things the week before. even race morning. i have no idea how this happened, but i did not have to go to the bathroom the entire time i ran the marathon. you do not even know my relief. it all just fell into place. i was never injured and never really that sore while preparing.
i only had two eventful training runs- getting caught in a storm when my cell phone stopped working and the morning(4am) i finally decided to quit the mapmyrun app. the night before that morning, my phone went crazy and i thought it would work the next day, like a one time thing. i had a 17 mile run to do and from the start it was jumping ahead. i ran back home, asked jonas for his cell phone and took it out of the case. jonas had kept his cell phone in perfect condition for a year. he always left it in an intense case. i had it for 3 minutes, tripped on a sidewalk while making sure the gps was working and shattered the screen. i cried and called him and apologized so much. he told me to keep running. so i did, feeling horrible about the phone(which i could still use) and a big scrape on my knee. i think i would have rather been punched in the face by a homeless lady again...which happened during my first half marathon training.
jonas ran the half marathon, so we got to run together for a while. i am so proud of him. i am also a little scared because he keeps talking about marathons all over the world that we should run. i am over here like "no training in the winter..please?"
anyway, the marathon went really well. my time really improved since the summer, i am sure that the humdity had something to do with poor times.... plus it improved from logging all those miles. I ran the half in less than two hours but finished in about 4 hours and 30 minutes. The last 4 miles were tough, but not impossible. After you run 22, 4 more does not seem so bad. If I were to train again, I would make my longest run closer to 24 instead of just 21. That would have just worked for me.
after the marathon, a local gym let me take a shower. it was the best shower of my life. i remember some silent weeping, not because of pain or anything. it was happiness and gratitude and fulfilment.
what i learned from this whole thing: if you believe that you can make something happen, then you can. get out there and do it!

Fairmount Falls.
There is this website about Kentucky. They have inspired me to see more of this gorgeous state. This is Fairmount Falls in Louisville. It was a short hike (two miles total). You have to have a permit to visit, which is very easy to obtain. It was a lovely morning, hiking is my favorite.
We went out for bento boxes after and the restaurant had art that was star wars themed. It looks pretty cool. I am almost ashamed to say we went to DKD again, the amount of dining we do there is getting out of hand. haha.

Christmas!
Jonas and I had a great run on Christmas morning. We planned on running a 5K but I got carried away looking around downtown (and pausing to snap some photos) so we ended up running 5 miles (with decent times too, yay!) We had a blast running with no one around. It was a gorgeous morning!
We drove to my grandma's house in Lexington after. The best part was her telling us about Baby Jesus. It filled my heart right up, I love my grandma.
We also visited our friends/ my sister's family. They usually let us crash their Christmas :) I loved giving my nieces and nephew their gifts, they are definitely my favorite people to shop for.
& it's all over but I am going to keep my tree up until 2015!

the most wonderful christmas eve.
We had the loveliest Christmas Eve dinner at Kansai. Our chef was so funny and we sat with a really nice family who laughed with us(in a good way) when I spilled my drink all over myself and the table. That meal was so delicious and truly perfect :)
We tried to take a family photo with katze and this happenedː
My vintage santa and our Germany nativity were there to make the evening merry & bright ::
Jonas gave me the Wes Anderson Collection. I'm obsessed! and please ignore that ugly heater in our living room, it is the worst day when I have to take it downstairs ::
We present a talent before we can open our first gift. I played "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" on my cello and Jonas read a german poem and he had to translate for me ::
Modeling my new shoes. I love them so much. ::
Jonas put please & thank you cookie dough in my stocking. Bless him ː:
Because Germany won this year, this man deserved the new jersey! ::
Katze gets a present too. I have had way too much fun throwing that snowman for her ::

Christmas Eve Eve.
It was a splendid Christmas Eve Eve. We found baumkuchen at Aldi after thinking that we wouldn't have one this year. I thought I could only find them at World Market and they didn't order them for some crazy reason. We watched Elf in German with hot cocoa and little snacks and decorated a giant gingerbread man. Isn't his mustache so cute?

advent three.
This weekː Jonas got to talk to his brothers for hours, they sounded like they were having so much fun. It was happy. He was thinking a lot about home so we had dinner at Das Gasthaus and worked on our house a little this week, look at Jonas in that mess! We had our Christmas dinner at work, I received one of the most thoughtful gifts from a coworker- a little card with an offer to help us with our house for one day. Incredibly sweet. We watched It's A Wonderful Life. We had a beautiful french dinner in New Albany. There was Beef Bourguignon, people. We also saw the new Hobbit. Some parts of it were so ridiculous, I had to hide to laugh. Oh, I saw the Nutcracker again. I was closer this time and could really see the dancers. Gorgeous. I can't believe we are so far into this Christmas season, I don't want it to end! my photos are kind of random, but that's ok!

the nutcracker.
We took a picture in front of our tree before we went out. I love that little tree...
Our Christmas date had all of my favorite thingsː dressing up and wearing high heels, sushi from dragon king's daughter..i know i talk about that place too much, dessert from the ice cream and pie kitchen, a gorgeous performance and christmas lights in the city.

nativity festival.
We had a wonderful dinner at Kashmir. I have not had Indian food since I spent some time in India years ago, I thought it was very authentic. We accidentally ordered too much because we wanted to try everything, but that is not a bad thing :)
After dinner, we went to the nativity festival at church. It is such a beautiful event and we had two nativities in there this year (the one pictured below and the German one with the fan on top). I am in awe of the volunteers who put this on, they did a great job- again.

First Advent.
It has been a great week of Christmas traditions. We have lit the first candle in the advent wreath. We picked out a new ornament together, mailed our Christmas cards with the cutest Rudolph stamps, started on our chocolate advent calendars, mailed packages to family in Germany, drove through the Megacavern in Louisville for the lights with the missionaries from church and celebrated St. Nick's day with treats in our shoes.
i spy that someone has already taken their jerky. |
